Whistler Village
Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

From its early beginnings in 1965 as a local ski hill with day lodge, Whistler is now considered to be the largest ski resort in North America. Whistler Blackcomb has truly transformed into a successful 'four season' resort.

Conveniently located within a 2-hour drive of downtown Vancouver, Whistler is easily accessible.

With over 2 million visitors annually, the resort caters to a broad customer base, including a strong international visitor segment.

Aside from the two high-vertical large terrain mountains, Whistler features a retail village that includes over 600,000 sf of shopping, food / beverage, services and other guest amenities to serve the needs and wants of its residents and visitors.

With approximately 10,000 full-time residents within the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the resort relies on its tourist base as the primary revenue generator.

In addition to the natural mountain and outdoor attraction, Whistler's strong destination appeal can be attributed to its mixed-use nature and plethora of activities for all ages.

Combining the above with the resort's upscale hotel properties (e.g. Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Four Seasons, Westin), various accommodations (e.g. village condominiums and other housing products); 3 championship golf courses, community centre, meeting facilities and other infrastructure; Whistler is a 'must-see' tourist destination.

Thomas Consultants was hired by the Provincial Government to assist in the planning of Whistler Village in early 1980. As one of the lead development consultants in the village's initial planning phase, the firm's role was to conceptualize the function and uses of the 'town centre' to ensure a multi-faceted development for this four season destination resort. During this early planning stage, Thomas Consultants' role was also was to solicit commercial interest.

Development of the town centre incorporated hotels, condominiums, specialty retail, a supermarket, cottage industries, offices, a theatre, restaurants / bars and other recreational / entertainment facilities.

An integral part of the Thomas Consultants' involvement was to attract a major hotel to anchor the overall development, which was successful with the Delta Hotel commitment of 260 rooms.

As the resort evolves over time, Thomas Consultants continues to assist the Resort Municipality's efforts with respect to a sustainable retail strategy plan and zoning / use reviews to further enhance Whistler's appeal for both residents and visitors.
